Belly dance has been a special part of my life since I was a child. I would admire my mom and aunt as they worked on choreography in the kitchen or living room and loved the jingly, sparkly costumes they would sew for performances. When I was 10 years old, I choreographed my first belly dance to Enya’s “Orinoco Flow” which my sister and I would perform for family. One of my favorite things to do was attend live belly dance shows and conventions. I loved being surrounded by the bright costumes hanging from vendor stalls. My eyes would be glued on the elegant and strong dancers on stage. I especially loved hearing the ululation of praise bestowed upon the best dancers. Most of all, I loved that it was a time to bond with the women in my family, especially my Mom.
As an adult, I continued to belly dance at home with my collection of Suhaila Salimpour instructional DVDs. Eventually, I began training with the lovely and accomplished Namira and was invited to join her competition troupe, Jouahir Tahoe, shortly after.
